[ARCHIVED] January is Radon Action Month

Did you know: High levels of radon have been found in homes in and around Bayfield County? We have seen levels up to 60 piC/mL in the Bayfield and Iron River areas. Exposure to radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Each year in the United States, approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths are caused by radon. “People that have never smoked are being diagnosed with lung cancer. Our county has areas of naturally high levels of radon in our soil, therefore it is very important every household test for radon.

Testing is low cost, fast and easy. Since January is Radon Action Month – Bayfield County Health Department will be offering FREE Radon Test kits! Test kits are available here at the health department, but also at the following locations to make it easier to pick up a kit:

BAYFIELD - Bayfield Carnegie Library
CABLE - Forest Lodge Library
CORNUCOPIA - Town of Bell Community Center
IRON RIVER - Iron River Library
WASHBURN - Bayfield County Health Department

Most homes with high radon levels can be fixed for between $800 to $1,500. If your test result is elevated or if you have questions about making your home safe, contact Anne-Marie Coy at the Bayfield County Health Department (715) 373-6109 or the Northern Wisconsin Radon Information Center at 1-715-748-1410. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
