Where can you camp in Bayfield County?
Whether you like quiet camping with lots of trees or big open spaces that accommodate larger campers and a bit of a social scene, we’ve got tons of choices! There are 26 campgrounds in Bayfield County – 17 public campgrounds and 9 private.
Also, there are different vibes at National Forest campgrounds, town, county or privately owned campgrounds.
Some campgrounds have cabins, too. And if you want a cabin, there are lots of options there, too, beyond the ones at the campgrounds.
What are some of the campgrounds that are available?
Washburn is famous for their camping on the big lake and is now working on a reservation system for Memorial Park that they are hoping to have up and running soon. Other places to camp on Lake Superior include: Dalrymple Campground in Bayfield (city-owned), Buffalo Bay and Point DeTour campgrounds in Red Cliff, Little Sand Bay, and the Town of Clover campground on the beach in Herbster.
A newer campground that not a lot of people know about is the Drummond Lake Campground run by the Town of Drummond. It has access to the ATV trail which is an added bonus, but it’s not just for ATV campers.
There’s also lots of camping on inland lakes – Moon Lake Park in Iron River, Twin Bear and Delta Lake Campgrounds on the Pike Chain, Birch Grove, Namakagon Lake Campground, Two Lakes, Wanoka Lake…
What if someone wants to camp on an island?
If you want to camp on one of the islands, you can either head to Madeline Island where there is a newly renovated Town Campground and also a beautiful State Park with camping. Or if you can get out to the other islands, be sure to check in with the National Park headquarters (715-779-3397 or www.nps.gov/apis).
What are some things that people may not know about camping in Bayfield County?
Something that a lot of people don’t realize is that you can camp on county and national forest land that is not in a developed area for free – you just have to pack out what you pack in. There are some limits to that, but you can find out more online.
Stay tuned – the county is going to be building 2 yurts that will be available to rent out later this summer – one on Mt. Ashwabay with a view of Lake Superior and the other in Cable. Both of them are on bike/ski trails so that you can get to them in any season, but they are off the beaten path. They’ll have bunks and a woodstove – I can’t wait to see how they turn out!
