[ARCHIVED] Ice Fishing Safety

safe ice thickness photo

Ice fishing is a winter tradition across northern Wisconsin. Ice fishing safety is all about the knowledge, and not taking risks. Please follow these guidelines before heading out on the ice.

· 2″ or less – DON’T GO

· 4″ – ICE FISH ON FOOT

· 5″ – ICE FISH AND RIDE ATV

· 8″ – 12″ – SAFE TO DRIVE CAR

· 12″ – 15″ – SAFE TO DRIVE TRUCK

Avoid Moving Water—Ice that forms over moving water is usually weaker, especially where there is a current.

Ask A Local—Before you head out to the lake, try calling a local bait shop and ask for the ice thickness report.

Know Where You Stand—Ice near the shore can be weaker than ice in the middle of the lake, and sometimes vice versa.

Watch For Snow—Snow can also insulate and warm the ice, slowing the freezing process.

Bring Ice Escape Spikes—They are two sharp objects connected by a piece of rope, just in case you do happen to fall through the ice, you can use them to crawl your way back out by stabbing the ice.

Dress Properly—If the lake is frozen, it’s probably very cold. Make sure you dress the part and protect yourself from the elements.

Communication—Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on returning.
