[ARCHIVED] Avian Flu Detected in Bayfield County

avian flu

  • At this time the property in question does not appear to be a risk to any other flocks or farms.  DATCP will do a site evaluation early in the week and assist the owner with any remaining ill poultry.
  • The state epidemiologist reported wild birds most likely infected the backyard flock.
  • The flock had exposures to wild turkeys – a feeding area for poultry was frequented by both domestic poultry and wild turkeys.
  • A pond on the property that the domestic ducks use was seen to have some wild geese earlier in the week.
  • Owners of domestic birds should remove any sources of food or water that are shared between domestic birds and wild birds
  • Owners of domestic birds should not have bird feeders out for wild birds.
  • Virus was fast acting.  Birds infected seemed lethargic in the evening and were dead by morning.

This type of fast acting virus could be devastating to our 4H families and farms.    There are safety protocols in the press release.    DATCP and Bayfield County Health recommend keeping flocks indoors or if that is not possible, keep them totally separate from wild birds as much as possible.
